FAQs - Hotspot Internet
Can I access
my corporate network using a Global Hotspot?
----> If your employer has provided
you with a virtual private network (VPN) client and a firewall, you
can seamlessly access your corporate network. Global strongly recommends
that its customers take measures to ensure the security of their wireless
connections, such as virtual private networks (VPNs), encryption and
firewalls. As with any wireless communication, the Global Hotspot
service is not inherently secure and you should ensure you have adequate
security safeguards in place.
Do I need
to download or install any special software to connect to the Global
Hotspot network?
----> The only software you will need
is the software driver for your Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless network card
and an Internet-ready web browser. The Global Hotspot service requires
no additional software.
How does
the service work?
----> Global installs access points
throughout each service location, which transmit a radio signal wirelessly
to a user's Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless network card. With a properly installed
wireless network card, a customer launches their browser from within
a Global service location and receives a log-in page to enter their
user name and password. Once their account information is verified,
they are able to connect to Internet resources. With full connectivity
to the Internet, customers can access any Internet resources, as well
as any corporate networks to which they have access from the Internet.
How fast
is the Global Hotspot service?
----> Each Global Hotspot location
has at least a Broadband connection, which provides users with speeds
of up to 1 Mbps; however certain location could have speeds up to
11 Mbps. The Wi-Fi 802.11b technology allows for speeds up to 11 Mbps,
but throughput is governed by the speed at which the device is connected.
What do
I need to access the service at a Global Hotspot?
----> You will need three things to
begin using a Hotspot. First you will need a laptop or handheld with
Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless capability. Your existing device may already
have this capability built-in. If not, you can purchase a Wi-Fi 802.11b
wireless networking card for most laptops and many handhelds from
any major electronics retailer or direct from the manufacturer.
Second, you will need a standard Internet-ready browser on any operating
system. No additional software is required.
Third, you will need a Hotspot rate plan. Each Hotspot location has
a full line of service plans to meet the needs of any mobile user
- from our Pay as you go and Prepay plans for the occasional user
to our annual and month to month Subscription plans for the more frequent
user.
What is
a Global Hotspot?
----> Global Hotspot is high-speed
wireless Internet access available in convenient public locations
such as airports, airline clubs and coffeehouses. This robust network
is built up of Broadband connections at every location. Using either
a laptop or handheld that is Wi-Fi 802.11b wirelessly-enabled, you
can access the Internet or your corporate intranet at speeds up to
50 times faster than dial-up.
Where can
I purchase a wireless Ethernet card?
----> You can purchase a Wi-Fi 802.11b
wireless networking card for most laptops and many handhelds from
Global Internet Services limited who is the authorized distributor
of wireless equipments of various vendors. You can also purchase a
card from one of our featured Hotspots.
